Be Sure That Your African Grey Parrot Baby Has Been Weaned Before Bringing Him Home

If you are interested in bringing home an African Grey parrot, then it would be a good idea for you to choose an African Grey baby ahead of an adult African Grey and in fact, it normally should be aged a few weeks old at the time of acquisition. However, before you buy or acquire an African Grey baby you need to realize that it is not easy to know its sex from simply observing its shape as well as color and even posture. The best way to determine the sex of the African Grey baby is through surgery which will guarantee a positive identification though such surgery can only be performed by an experienced Avian veterinary.

DNA Sexing

Even DNA sexing is another sure way of finding out the sex of the African Grey baby. Furthermore, when you look at an African Grey baby, you can be sure that it has not become an adult if you notice that the whole of its eye is black. However, it is not recommended that you buy or acquire an African Grey baby that has not as yet been entirely weaned, and so you should get your baby only after it has attained the age of between one and two weeks.

Once you bring home your new African Grey baby, you can expect it to remain in your home for as long as fifty years, and mercifully, these birds are generally healthy creatures that are not known to have any major diseases to contend with. As far as the hygiene of the African Grey baby goes, it is alright to bathe your baby though you need to realize that certain baby birds like to be bathed while others resent it.

The eyes of the African Grey baby will generally remain dark grey as well as black until it has reached its sixth birthday after which the shades begin to lighten in color and on their first birthday the eyes will have turned to a pale straw shade. Furthermore, after its third or fourth birthday, the eyes of the African Grey baby will then become light yellow and this is how you will be able to truly determine the age of the African Grey baby, which is important if you happen to be buying your baby from a bird store.

As far as African Grey behavior is concerned, it may be noted that these birds have the intelligence normally associated with five year children and their emotions are those of a child aged two years, and thus this intelligence makes them behave in a demanding manner – with good reason.

It is these traits in the African Grey that make it a most sought after pet bird and even though they stand out from other pets, they are not ideally suited for all kinds of pet owners.
